Premature greying of the hair is characterized by the loss of pigmentation in the hair follicles before the age of 25. Hair can turn grey prematurely for multiple reasons, including lack of proper nutrients in the body, stress and genetics. Grey hair can also be attributed to cosmetic choices, including washing your hair with hot water and blow drying the hair. However, you can help combat the premature onset of grey hair by way of a few simple remedies.

Copper

A lack of melanin production may be caused by a deficiency of copper in the body, says the Women Fitness site. Thus, eating foods rich in copper can increase your melanin production to normal levels and subsequently darken your hair. Foods rich in copper include crabs, oysters, lemons, portabella mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms, as well as nuts and seeds such as cashews, almonds and sunflower seeds. For liquid intake of copper, try moderate amounts chamomile tea, regular or decaffeinated espresso or water. Be careful with these beverages, however, as excessive amounts can reduce the amount of nutrients that reach your hair, which can actually precipitate premature greying.

Curry Leaves

Curry leaves can limit premature greying by increasing the strength of your hair's roots, according to the Home Remedies for You site. Your hair roots will be healthier and retain the pigment they possess. You can take in curry leaves by sprinkling the leaves over meals, or using sauces and spices made out of curry leaves at meal time. For a curry-infused condiment you can use every day, try mixing curry leaves with your butter. You can also use curry to make a hair tonic to apply to your hair to increase growth and darker pigmentation in your hair. To make the tonic, boil curry leaves with coconut oil, allow it to cool, rub on the hair and rinse.

Amaranth

Amaranth is a vegetable that helps your hair keep its natural color. In addition, amaranth will help keep your hair soft, limiting the wiry look of grey hair caused by lack of moisture. This vegetable also stimulates hair growth, meaning more hair that has your natural, darker pigment. After shampooing, apply the juice of amaranth's leaves to your hair and rinse. Perform this hair care regimen daily.

Indian Gooseberries

Indian gooseberries can be used to help with prematurely greying hair. That's because these berries, also called amla, stimulate hair growth and hair pigmentation, says the Women Fitness site. Soak dried gooseberries in water and apply the water to your hair at the end of your hair care regimen. Indian gooseberries can also be used to color the hair a black shade. First, cut the gooseberries into smaller pieces and dry them. Next, boil the pieces with coconut oil until the solid matter has the consistency of dust, says the site. The liquid will have a black sheen to it. Sift out the solid material and apply to your scalp every day.
