Fentanyl is a potent and potentially dangerous synthetic opiod. When used in the transdermal patch form, it is applied to the skin where it releases fentanyl into body fats and then into the blood stream. Fentanyl patches are for patients requiring continuous opioid treatment for chronic pain that is unable to be managed with other medications. If not properly used, fentanyl patches can lead to severe health risks, dependency and even death.

Respiratory Depression

Fentanyl patches are to be administered with caution to those with pre-existing medical conditions, such as emphysema, predisposing them to the risk of developing respiratory depression, also known as hypoventilation. Respiratory depression occurs when your rate of breathing decreases. Fentanyl advances these complications. According to the Federal Drug Administration, patients are to avoid heat exposure to the patch as it promotes fentanyl release from the patch, increasing absorption that may lead to overdose.

Severe Allergic Reaction

According to Online Lawyer Source, fentanyl can lead to severe allergic reactions in some patients. These symptoms may consist of hives, facial swelling, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat and breathing difficulties. If any of these symptoms occur, consult your physician immediately.

Dependency

Fentanyl patches are not recommended for patients that have a history of drug or alcohol dependency, and may lead to physical and psychological dependence and poses a high risk for abuse. Fentanyl is an opiod and is often abused for the intense euphoric effects it may cause. A patient's tolerance for fentanyl can develop rapidly and varies from person to person. Discontinuation of fentanyl can lead to withdrawal symptoms that may include chills, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, fever, rapid heartbeat and anorexia. According to Waismann Method, a drug-dependency treatment center, patients that are planning to discontinue use of the fentanyl patch are advised to taper off slowly to prevent severe withdrawal symptoms.

Death

According to the U.S. Federal Drug Administration, the FDA is investigating reports of death and other related events to narcotic overdose in those patients that use the fentanyl patch. Directions must be followed exactly to prevent severe side effects or even death with the use of fentanyl patches.
