Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

The holiday season lasts from November until the New Year. It is a time of family, giving, celebration and food. It is difficult not to eat a lot of food that isn't particularly good for you. Also, the holiday season takes place during the winter, and if it is cold where you live you tend to get less physical activity. There are, however, ways you can avoid gaining extra weight during the holidays while enjoying all of the festivities.

Step 1

Turn holiday shopping into a workout. Park your car as far as possible from the store or mall so you have to walk a little farther. Take the stairs instead of the escalator. Walk briskly while shopping. Even carrying a lot of bags can help tone your arms. Avoid the food court and bring a bag of baby carrots or another healthy snack to avoid cravings.

Step 2

Carry water with you at all times. Water can help you lose weight because it raises the metabolism, helps you feel satisfied so you consume fewer calories and curbs thirst-induced cravings, according to Dr. Melina Jampolis, physician and nutrition expert. Drinking enough water, about eight cups per day, will help you avoid overeating.

Step 3

Always eat breakfast. Don't starve yourself all day so you can eat mounds of pumpkin pie and cookies at a party. Eat a healthy, balanced breakfast and several small, healthy snacks throughout the day to keep you satisfied and your metabolism running all day. When you get to the party you won't be famished and you can enjoy the party food in sensible portions.
