Estrogen is one of the major reproductive hormones. Normally, this hormone exists in balance with your body's progesterone, but when estrogen is too high and progesterone is too low, you can encounter symptoms like breast tenderness, irregular menstrual periods and miscarriage. If left untreated, high levels of estrogen can lead to breast cancer. There are many ways to reduce estrogen naturally.
Step 1
Undergo blood tests to validate your high estrogen. These are vital for determining how high your estrogen is, but also how high or low other hormones are, such as progesterone and testosterone. Establish baseline values and determine normal levels for your body so you have a means to evaluate future successes.
Step 2
Increase progesterone. Low progesterone leads to a condition called "estrogen dominance." To increase progesterone, try natural progesterone creams or progesterone supplements. Make sure to get enough sleep and to reduce stress, as these affect the hormonal system and decrease progesterone.
Step 3
Avoid eating soy products. Soy products are high in natural plant phytoestrogens and can contribute to estrogen dominance. Dairy products from pregnant or hormone treated cows also contain estrogen, as could meat from animals fed hormones. Eat organic foods when you can to reduce exposure to synthetic estrogens.
Step 4
Take chaste tree berry extract or vitex. This does not contain any hormones, but rather, works on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, stimulating balanced production of estrogen and progesterone.
Step 5
Take care of your liver. By reducing the amount of alcohol you drink and the number of toxins and pesticides you consume, you can potentially help lower your estrogen. The liver plays a vital role in breaking down and processing extra estrogen in the body, and can be overwhelmed with alcohol or toxins, leading to higher levels of estrogen.
