Acne scars sometimes last years after the pimples have gone away. Dermatologists can remove acne scars with lasers or dermabrasion, but these procedures can be painful and expensive. If you need to cover acne scars immediately, you can successfully camouflage them with high-quality makeup. Jeffrey Rapaport, M.D., of Englewood, New Jersey's Cosmetic Skin and Surgery Center recommends using oil-free, hypoallergenic products from professional cosmetics companies to achieve the best results. His technique is also effective for covering an emerging pimple.

Step 1

Wash your face with warm water and a mild, oil-free facial cleanser. Rinse with cold water to close your pores.

Step 2

Apply concealer to scarred areas with a fresh cotton swab. Do not use the sponge tip applicator packaged with the concealer, as this can transfer bacteria from your face to your makeup.

Step 3

Use a disposable makeup sponge to blend the concealer into your skin.

Step 4

Apply foundation lightly over the concealer with a dabbing motion, then blend it with the makeup sponge. After the foundation dries, you can apply a second coat if needed. Dispose of the makeup sponge when you are finished using it.

Step 5

Brush a light layer of powder over your face to set the makeup and smooth your skin.

Things You'll Need

  • Oil-free cleanser
  • Concealer
  • Foundation
  • Loose or pressed powder
  • Disposable makeup sponge
  • Cotton swabs
  • Large powder brush
