Olive oil is a healthy fat that can nourish hair. Since it can make the hair appear shinier and can prevent excess damage, olive oil is commonly used in shampoo to give it a moisturizing quality. Make your own olive oil shampoo to avoid harmful chemicals and added ingredients. When you make your own shampoo, you can customize the fragrance to fit your personal preference.
Step 1
Measure 1 tsp. olive oil, 2 tbsp. aloe vera extract and 1/2 cup liquid castile soap. Stir the ingredients together in a bowl. Aloe vera contributes to strong, soft hair. Castile soap cleans the hair and scalp, removing buildup.
Step 2
Choose a dried herb or flower for the fragrance. Popular choices are chamomile, lavender, rosemary and roses. If you like, use an herbal tea bag. Steep the dried herb, flower or teabag in boiling water for several minutes. Strain the concoction, leaving only one third of a cup. If you do not wish to boil the flower or herbs, let them sit in 1/3 cup water in an airtight, glass bottle for two weeks. This will allow the fragrance to infuse the water.
Step 3
Pour the fragrance into the castile soap mixture. Stir the ingredients, and pour them into an old, clean shampoo bottle or any sealed container.
Tips and Warnings
- Do not add more than 1 tsp. olive oil. Olive oil is good for hair, but if you add too much, the oil will linger in the hair, making it appear greasy and weighed down. Castile soap is a gentle cleanser made from vegetable oils. It can be found in liquid or bar form at some drugstores and supermarkets. Health-food stores often carry castile soap. If you are having trouble finding it, you can purchase it online.
