According to MayoClinic.com, synthetic human growth hormone, available only as an injection, has been used for many years for the treatment of conditions involving its frank deficiency. Human growth hormone, or HGH, has also been approved for treatment of HIV-related muscle wasting. Growth hormone injections have been postulated to have the ability to increase the muscle mass, bone density and exercise capacity while decreasing body fat. There are various dangers associated with HGH injections.

Negative Effects on Glucose Levels

The Faculty of Medicine: University of New South Wales lists various negative effects that HGH can exert on the blood glucose levels: In diabetics and people with glucose intolerance, injections of HCG can render diabetic control very difficult and raise the blood glucose levels. In others, injections of HGH place the patient at risk of sudden lowering of blood glucose, a condition called hypoglycemia, which can be fatal.

Acromegaly

The Faculty of Medicine: University of New South Wales mentions that acromegaly is the commonest side effect of the abuse of human growth hormone injections with a doctor's prescription. Acromegaly is a condition that involves overproliferation of cartilage, bones and connective tissue throughout the body, leading to a significant change in physical appearance; the joints are thickened and can result in a protruding jaw, broader and larger facial features, and enlargement of the hands and feet. The internal organs also increase in size and the skin becomes thickened and oily; the patient may notice an increase in number of skin tags. Females can suffer menstruation irregularities and males can suffer from inability to achieve or maintain an erection, also known as erectile dysfunction. Acromegaly is associated with a reduced life expectancy due to the associated hypertension and cardiac disease due to the heart's enlargement, known as cardiomyopathy.

Fluid Retention

Drugs.com reports fluid retention as a common side effect of HCG injections. Fluid retention causes bloating, swelling of limbs, aches and muscle pains, painful joints, and possibly tingling and numbness in the wrists due to swelling in the carpal tunnel, entrapping the sensory nerves of the hand.
