A lower body lift, also referred to as a belt lipectomy, is surgical procedure that is performed in an attempt to tighten loose skin on the buttocks, thighs and hips. The surgery is usually performed on those who have had dramatic weight loss, such as after a bariatric surgery.
Procedure
A lower body lift is performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, a plastic surgeon will make incisions in the body from the back, around the hips and to the front of the thighs, according to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. The surgeon will then remove excess skin and underlying layers of fat from the lower body. When the excess material is removed, the remaining skin will be stretched over the area, smoothed down and secured into place with stitches and sutures.
Recovery
According to the American Academy of Plastic Surgeons, recovery usually takes two to three weeks. It is recommended for those undergoing the procedure to plan to be out of work for three weeks.
Cost
As of 2010, the cost of a lower body lift ranges from $13,000 to $17,000. Cost can vary depending on the plastic surgeon and the facilities.
