Developed in the 1990s, Smart Lipo is a trademark brand of laser lipolysis, or fat destruction. The complications of traditional liposuction result in part from the general anesthesia and hospitalization, whereas Smart Lipo is an outpatient procedure and requires only local anesthetic. Despite this, Smart Lipo is an invasive plastic surgery that has risks as well as benefits.
Infection
During Smart Lipo, a small cannula with a laser is inserted into the area for fat removal. The skin is the first barrier of defense and protects underlying structures from infection. The Smart Lipo surgery and wounds provide potential for infection.
Cosmetic Changes
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, cosmetic complications can occur with Smart Lipo. Uneven fat removal can result in asymmetrical contours. The heat generated by the Smart Lipo laser can cause scarring and thermal burns on surrounding tissues. If a person is more than 30 percent overweight, she should not have Smart Lipo and may be setting unrealistic goals for proposed post surgical appearance per the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Swelling and Bleeding
When the Smart Lipo laser destroys fat cells, fluids are released. These fluids can accumulate under the skin and cause swelling for approximately six to eight weeks post-procedure. Bleeding under the skin and clot formation may elicit painful bruising.
Pain
The manufacturers of Smart Lipo emphasize the minimal downtime and reduced pain with this procedure. However, a burning type of pain in the treated areas can last up to a month, according to Smartlipo-Mpx.org. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons states that nerve damage can occur, which would result in long-term or permanent sensation changes in the treated tissues.
