With the growing levels of obesity in children, weight loss camps for teens have become increasingly popular. In California, the trend for increasingly healthy lifestyles has resulted in the development of several weight loss camps for overweight teenagers. Beaches, mountains, forests and lakes enhance many of the camps and their activities.

Camp Goals

Weight loss camps for teens differ from other teen camps in that the focus is wellness. Not only do these camps aim to help campers lose weight, but their goal is to also teach campers about proper nutrition and fitness, in an effort to ensure the weight loss continues after camp. Campers are taught how to overcome challenges. Camps, such as Wellspring's Camp La Jolla, use encouragement, education and support to help teens make lifestyle changes that will benefit them for years to come.

Costs

The costs for weight loss camps in California vary depending on the camp. Because they are specialized, residential camps, often with medical professionals as part of the staff, they are often more expensive than a traditional summer camp. Rates average between $1,000 to $3,000 per week. Many camps offer discounts for campers interested in longer programs. Adventure Chicks Tahoe offers discounts for two-, three- and four-week sessions. Longer stays help ensure campers make the changes they've learned at camp permanent.

Activities

There are always numerous activities for teens to take part in at weight loss camps. An active lifestyle is a crucial component of a healthy lifestyle. Campers at Camp La Jolla can enjoy surfing, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, aerobics, and yoga. They also offer group activities such as street hockey, ultimate Frisbee, capture the flag, rugby and even a mini-Olympics. Camp California Fitness not only has a variety of sports to offer, but also a talent show and team building exercises to help build campers' self-esteem.

Programs

The programs available at each weight loss camp vary. Camp La Jolla offers separate programs for girls and boys, to meet the differing needs of these campers. Campers are also separated by age: eight- to 12-year olds, 13- to 16-year olds, and 17- and 18-year olds. In contrast, Adventure Chicks only offers programs for girls. There, program spaces are also limited to only 15 girls per session. Program spots are on a first come, first served basis. For this reason, early registration is highly recommended.

Average Results

Weight loss results are highly dependent on the individual camper's commitment to the process. Continued success after camp is also highly dependent on the camper's dedication when they return home. Camp La Jolla reports that on average its campers lose four pounds per week, and that 70 percent of its campers continue or maintain their weight loss after returning home. These results are fueled by a low-fat, low-density diet and days filled with activity, including at least 10,000 steps per day through walks, fitness classes and other activities.
