High testosterone can be a serious health risk for women, and this hormone imbalance can even change the way her body looks. Testosterone belongs to a group of hormones known as androgens, which are responsible for puberty, sexuality and hair growth and may even play a role in the function of other organs. Produced by both sexes, testosterone is more commonly associated with male sexuality. Increased testosterone in women may cause virilization, which is the development of masculine characteristics, according to Merck. If left untreated, high testosterone can lead to other conditions, such as such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and heart disease.

High Blood Testosterone Levels

The normal laboratory range of testosterones for females is 30 to 95 ng/dL, according to MedlinePlus. Testosterone levels should be discussed with the physician to determine if they are within normal range and whether testosterone levels are related to the symptoms expressed.

Changes in Hair Growth

A woman may begin to grow hair in places like the face, chest and back. This is called hirsutism. Up to 10 percent of women experience some degree of hirsutism, according to Mayo Clinic. The major symptom of hirsutism is coarse or pigmented body hair appearing where it doesn't belong. A female with high testosterone might notice male pattern baldness, or losing hair at the crown of the head or a receding hairline.

Deepening Voice

Her voice may deepen as testosterone rises. She may be unaware of this change, however, as it is difficult to notice changes in one's own voice.

Change in Body Shape

A woman's body may change shape and she may begin to resemble a man. She may develop more muscular mass and experience an increase in body fat. In extreme cases, her breasts may become smaller and her clitoris enlarge.

Skin Problems

Endocrine imbalances sometimes cause skin problems. A woman with high testosterone may have acne and skin that appears oily. This symptom may go unnoticed and simply covered up with makeup.

Irregular Menstral Periods

Hormones play an important part in regulating a woman's period, or menstrual cycle. A hormone imbalance such as high testosterone may cause her to experience irregular or missed periods. Her periods may even stop completely, according to LabTestsOnline, and she may be unable to get pregnant.

Mood Swings

Mood swings have been reported with elevated testosterone levels. A woman may become more aggressive as her testosterone rises. Merck also cites increased sex drive in women with high levels of testosterone.
