As a person ages, it is common for a person to suffer from thin skin states the MayoClinic.com. You lose the fatty protective layer beneath the surface of the skin and you may find that you suffer from bruises and tears more often. Although you can not reverse the condition, you can do things to improve the skin along with protecting it from injury.

Change Medications

Some treatments can make you prone to thin skin. By discussing other treatment options, you may be able to find a therapy that does not cause this problem. Medications that can possible cause thin skin include steroid medications given orally or as a topical treatment. Once you discontinue use of the steroid, you will likely note an improvement in the texture of your skin.

Treat Underlying Disorder

According to MayoClinic.com, you may develop thin skin if you suffer from certain medical conditions, such as amyloidosis, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and bleeding diseases. Undergoing therapies for these problems may remedy your thin skin.

Antioxidants

According to PennState, certain antioxidants can protect against free radicals that can damage and age the skin. These antioxidants include vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene. Apply an antioxidant rich lotion or cream on a daily basis to treat and repair thin skin. Use the lotion or cream twice a day. Slather it on after bathing to best lock in moisture.

Sunscreen

Sun exposure can damage the skin and speed up the aging process. As part of your treatment process for thin skin, you should apply a broad spectrum sunscreen before heading outdoors. Choose a brand with a sun protection factor or SPF of 15 or higher. Reapply every two hours of prolonged sun exposure. Protective clothing, such as hats, long sleeve shirts and pants and sunglasses can also help keep the skin safe from the sun's harmful effects.
