Signs of Pregnancy While Still Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a natural form of birth control, as long as the baby is nursed exclusively and frequently. However, it is possible to become pregnant while breastfeeding, especially if your baby isn't eating frequently throughout the night or if you are supplementing her feedings with formula. Knowing the signs of pregnancy while breastfeeding is one step toward ensuring you get proper prenatal care.

Menstruation Changes

Women who are breastfeeding may not be aware of a pregnancy because they may not get a period while breastfeeding. According to Dr. Robert Zurawin of Baby Center, ovulation occurs approximately 2 weeks prior to a period, which means you will actually ovulate before you have a period. A woman with signs of pregnancy while breastfeeding should take a pregnancy test or visit her doctor for testing.

Nursing Changes

A baby who is breastfeeding may start to self wean if you become pregnant. Hormones from the pregnancy alter the taste and consistency of the breast milk. Many women experience a decline in milk production as a result of the pregnancy hormones. In some cases, the breasts and nipples may become sore and the mother may decide to wean because of the extreme discomfort caused by the baby nursing.

Common Pregnancy Signs

Even if a woman gets pregnant while breastfeeding, traditional signs of pregnancy will usually be present. These include fatigue, backache, headaches, morning sickness and frequent urination. Some women may also experience mood swings and food cravings or aversions.

Contractions

While breastfeeding a baby while pregnant may not cause any contractions, nipple stimulation is one method used to speed up labor. Because of the hormones released when a baby nurses, going into preterm labor is possible if your baby continues to nurse while you are pregnant. If you experience any signs of preterm labor, including contractions, spotting or abdominal pain, a trip to the emergency room is warranted.
