Acupressure for depression is an alternative therapeutic approach helpful in managing mild symptoms. Use of acupressure is beneficial, however, patients should consult physicians before beginning alternative therapy. The best way to learn about the healing nature of acupressure is by attending acupressure sessions with a trained provider and practicing self-care techniques.

Depression

Depression takes different forms, ranging from mild to severe. Occasional bouts of sadness are a normal part of the human experience. However, persistent sadness that interferes with daily functioning is considered serious and warrants clinical treatment. The National Institute of Mental Health notes that depressive disorders requiring clinical intervention are typically treated through use of psychiatric medications and psychotherapy. Alternative and holistic treatments are helpful in treating milder symptoms of depression as an adjunct to longer-term psychiatric treatment.

Symptoms

The experience of depression affects the emotions and body. Feelings of sadness, hopelessness and worthlessness commonly characterize the disorder. The National Institute of Mental Health indicates excessive fatigue, lack of energy and bodily aches also appear during depressive episodes. The physical symptoms are often so prominent and debilitating that engaging in normal daily activity such as school or work becomes laborious.

Acupressure

Acupressure is an ancient form of healing using the hands and fingers to apply pressure to specific body points. The Institute for Integrative Healthcare Studies says acupressure helps to release muscular tension, promote circulation to improve energy level and enables the body to relax deeply. Relieving stress from the muscles and the mind helps decrease the irritability, fatigue and aches experienced in depressive episodes.

Pressure Points

Pressure points are located by anatomical landmarks and lie underneath major muscle groups or near bones. Holistic Online notes the points are stimulated by placing pressure on the location or rubbing the spot. Stimulating anti-depression pressure points releases blocked energy, such as anger or guilt, so the feelings can surface for further exploration and understanding. Specific points exist for healing depression, ranging from the top of the head to the feet. Placing pressure on the head points relieves headaches and memory lapses. The wind pond consists of two pressure points toward the base of the skull, which relieve tension and irritability when pressed. Two pressure points between the shoulder blades and spine, called the vital region, help induce relaxation and balance emotions.

Self-Acupressure for Depression

Acupressure is done by a trained healer, however, it is also something an individual can do alone when symptoms become overwhelming. MotherNature.com says the aches and pains associated with depression are treatable with quick acupressure exercises. Take a moment to sit or lie down in a comfortable position, keeping the spine straight. Holistic Online suggests breathing slowly and crossing the arms in front of the chest, similar to a self-hug, squeezing, then letting go. To relieve a headache, use finger pressure on each side of the base of the skull, holding for five to 10 seconds then releasing. For best results, visit a holistic healer trained in acupressure to learn simple home exercises to do in between visits.
