Candida albicans, also known as yeast, is a prolific bacteria that lives in the digestive tract and other mucous-lined areas of the body. An overgrowth of candida can cause yeast infections and bacterial infections of the mucous membranes. The conventional medical treatment includes over-the-counter products or prescription medication. Natural remedies also can alleviate symptoms and control yeast overgrowth.
Nutrition
Proper diet and nutrition are essential for controlling yeast. Because candida thrives on simple sugars and other carbohydrates, it is important to avoid sugary foods, at least temporarily, to prevent the bacteria from proliferating. Dr. William Crook, author of "The Yeast Connection," recommends avoiding all starchy foods, foods made with yeast and fermented foods for two to four weeks, or until major symptoms subside. The basic yeast-free diet is composed mainly of fresh vegetables, nuts and seeds, and unprocessed meats. Avoid all sugars, including candy, soda, coffee, tea, fruit, milk, bread, cereal, rice, potatoes and pasta.
Probiotics
Science has uncovered bacteria living in the intestines that perform important functions in the body. These friendly flora help with digestion, manufacture nutrients, strengthen the immune system and help control harmful bacteria such as candida albicans. Also known as probiotics, bacteria such as acidophilus, lactobacillus and bifidobacterium specifically combat yeast overgrowth. Probiotics are found naturally in yogurt and other cultured dairy products, but can also be purchased in capsule or tablet form from natural health food stores.
Vitamins and Minerals
Vitamins and minerals have a multitude of functions in the human body, one of which is strengthening the immune system, or the body's natural ability to fight infection. A diet deficient in essential nutrients can lead to illness. Dr. Crook recommends taking a daily multivitamin to prevent serious deficiencies. Additionally, supplemental vitamin C and B complex help fight infection and combat the effects of illness. Minerals such as zinc and magnesium also help support proper immune function. Vitamin and mineral supplements should be taken as directed by a health care professional.
Herbs
Herbs have long been used to treat illness and promote natural healing. According to the Clayton College of Natural Health herb guide, both garlic and goldenseal are used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. Garlic is naturally antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal. Goldenseal is used to treat infections of mucous membranes. It is effective against a number of known bacteria, including candida albicans. Both herbs can be taken orally or applied topically. Although widely accepted, the use of herbs for medicinal purposes is still under debate. Always consult a health care practitioner before trying herbs or other natural therapies.
Considerations
The overuse of prescription antibiotics has come under scrutiny, in part, because some patients report developing yeast infections following antibiotic treatment. Antibiotics kill not only offending bacteria, but helpful bacteria living in the intestines. If yeast is an ongoing problem, discus the issue with your doctor and avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics and other medications that may destroy healthy intestinal bacteria.
