Niacin is prescribed by doctors to help reduce the levels of cholesterol in a patient's blood. High levels of cholesterol can cause clogged arteries and lead to heart attacks, even heart failure. A side effect of niacin is described as the flush, a red, itchy warmth caused by the release of histamine. This reaction usually lasts between 10 and 20 minutes. Patients find the itching uncomfortable and often look for ways to relieve a niacin itch.
Step 1
Consult with your niacin-prescribing physician regarding the itch side effect.
Step 2
Lower the dosage of your niacin with the help of your doctor. The itch may be reduced or eliminated with a lower dosage. Your doctor can slowly increase your dosage back to the original prescription strength to help avoid the itching.
Step 3
Take between 325 mg and 650 mg of aspirin 30 minutes prior to taking your niacin dose. A study by Grace Brooks Huffman, M.D., in 1997 found the introduction of aspirin prior to taking niacin can reduce and may prevent the itching side effect.
