Waycross, originally known as Tebeauville, gets its name from the city's location at a railroad junction, where railroad lines from six directions meet. It is now the county seat of Ware County, Georgia. The attractions in Waycross, from the Okefenokee Swamp Park to the constant railroad action, are enough to satisfy even the pickiest of visitors.

Campgrounds in Waycross

The best camping in Waycross can be found at the Laura S. Walker State Park. With 44 tent, trailer, and RV campsites, this campground is well-suited to any breed of camper. In addition to its campsites, the Laura S. Walker State Park is home to several nature trails, an 18-hole golf course, a wildlife observation platform, and a swimming pool.

RV Campgrounds in Waycross

While RV campsites are available at the Laura S. Walker State Park, more RV accessible camping can be found at the Lazy Acres Mobile Park and RV. This campsite is near Winona Lake, as well as the Laura S. Walker and Stephen C. Foster state parks.

Waycross, Georgia Camping Seasons

While summer is a typical camping season, fall and spring are both very pleasant for camping in southern Georgia, especially in Waycross. South Georgia receives much rainfall in the late summer, especially in August, making it less than ideal for outdoor camping. Additionally, during the summer, highs in Waycross get well into the 90s, with nighttime lows in the 70s. In the winter, daytime highs reach the 60s, with lows in the high 30s.

State Parks in Waycross

Outdoor activities are plentiful in Waycross, Georgia, and are tailored to specific interests.

The Laura S. Walker State Park is located on the northern edge of the Okefenokee Swamp, and is home to lots of wildlife. Visitors may see, while walking along the park's trails, alligators, tortoises, or the over 100 species of birds. The park offers a 120-acre lake perfect for canoeing, water skiing, and fishing, a year-round golf course, and numerous hiking and biking trails.

The Okefenokee Swamp Park, which has been open since 1946, is locally owned and operated. It lies on the northern tip of a wildlife refuge, and offers visitors boat tours, train tours, and nature shows. Visitors can rent canoes, visit a Pioneer Island homestead, and view wildlife in their natural habitats.

Railroad Activity in Waycross

Railroad fans will find much to explore in Waycross. The Historic Passenger Rail Depot, built in the early 1900s, now houses the Waycross Tourism Bureau and Visitor Center, the Waycross-Ware County Chamber of Commerce, and other local offices. You can also enjoy a glimpse of Rice Yard, the largest of nine classification yards on the CSX Transportation Railroad network. On the viewing platform, visitors can view up to 2,900 cars that roll through Waycross and the Rice Yard daily for identification and classification.
