Sinus infections can cause pain in the face, behind the cheekbones, or behind the eyes and forehead. A hot pack can ease this pain, according to Elizabeth Keele, R.N., an instructor at Porterville College in California. Aromas from herbs and spices can both soothe and help open the sinuses. Gia Von Karl, an instructor with the American College of Healthcare Sciences, recommends spicy aromas such as ginger or cinnamon for opening the sinuses, while Langone Medical Center reports peppermint can help open sinuses and encourage mucous drainage.
Step 1
Lay the two pieces of fabric on a table, with the right sides of the fabric together, wrong sides out. Pin in place.
Step 2
Sew a 1/2-inch seam along three sides of the hot pack. Start at the top of one long side and sew around to the top of the opposite long seam, removing the pins as your sew. Leave one short side open.
Step 3
Mix the filler material and herbs in a small bowl. Mix with your hands to ensure the herbs are evenly distributed through the rice, buckwheat or flaxseed.
Step 4
Turn the pack right side out. Insert the funnel in the open end and pour in the filler mixture. Do not pack the filler. You want the hot pack to remain flexible enough to settle over your eyes and nose. Stop when the filler is 1/2 inch from the top of the pack.
Step 5
Fold in the raw edges of the pack and sew the pack shut with the needle and thread. Secure the end with a few tacking stitches and snip the thread.
Step 6
Heat the pack in the microwave for no more than two minutes. Lay the pack across the sinuses and leave it in place until it cools.
