About Mirapex

Mirapex is a dopamine agonist (a drug that stimulates the dopamine receptors in the brain) used to treat the tremors, stiffness and the slow physical movements of Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is caused by a reduction of the chemical transmitter called dopamine in the brain. Pramipexole is the generic name for Mirapex, the active ingredient that stimulates the dopamine receptors. At any given time, there are approximately 500,000 Americans affected with Parkinson’s disease and about 50,000 cases are diagnosed annually.

Function

Mirapex is an oral prescription drug that may be used with or without other medications in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. It may also be used to treat restless leg syndrome (RLS), a condition with sensations of burning and tingling in the lower legs and an involuntary urge to move them. Mirapex should be taken as directed by your doctor. Mirapex may be taken with or without food. It is available as a plain or coated tablets, capsules or suspension.

Side Effects

Mirapex, like all medications, has its benefits and side effects. The common side effects of Mirapex may include symptoms of nausea, upset stomach and a dry mouth. Other symptoms may include stuffy nose and loss of appetite along with constipation or diarrhea. There may also be dizziness, drowsiness and weakness as well as headache and abnormal dreams.

Allergic Reaction

An allergic reaction to Mirapex could occur. This is a serious medical emergency. Seek immediate emergency medical care if you have any of these symptoms, a rash with hives and itching, swelling of the face, mouth and tongue or throat along with wheezing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.

Considerations

Discuss your medical history with your doctor to include any medications you are taking. By doing this, you will avoid drug interactions or taking Mirapex with a medical condition that might be contraindicated. Medications like cimetidine, quinidine or verapamil may increase the risk of the side effects of Mirapex. Conditions like low blood pressure and kidney problems may be contraindicated to taking Mirapex.

Warning

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to get pregnant during the time you will be taking Mirapex. Do not take Mirapex if you are allergic to it. Mirapex may cause drowsiness and dizziness, so assess your alertness response and adjustment to taking Mirapex before driving or working with machinery or in hazardous situations. Contact your doctor immediately if you get unusual gambling or sexual urges. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
