The body's pH balance is a measure of levels of acidity and alkalinity in the blood and other fluids. When the body becomes out of balance--either too acidic or too alkaline--health problems can result. According to Dr. Janet Starr Hull, alternative health practitioner and nutritionist, a pH level of 6.4 is ideal and "any deviation ... either higher or lower, may create a sharp energy loss, emotional imbalances, and a depressed immune system." You can easily keep track of your pH levels at home with a simple litmus paper test.

Step 1

Purchase litmus paper. It is inexpensive and easy to buy online at Amazon.com or an online medical supply retailer like MedexSupply.com.

Step 2

Test first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening for accurate results.

Step 3

Collect a small sample of your saliva and urine--one drop of each is enough.

Step 4

Take the test strip out of its packaging without touching the end that is used for testing.

Step 5

Touch the testing end of the strip very quickly to the drop of urine, then to the drop of saliva.

Step 6

Shake any excess liquid from the test strip and immediately match the color of the strip to the chart that came with it to find your pH level.

Things You'll Need

  • Litmus paper
  • Saliva and urine samples
