If you drive an automobile, you will probably find yourself involved in an accident at some point. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, approximately 5,811,000 automobile accidents were reported to the police in 2008. That is an average of 15,921 accidents per day. Combine that with the number of crashes that weren't reported, and your looking at an even more staggering figure. While you hope it will never happen to you, it's best know what to do and who to contact in the event of an accident.
Step 1
Contact the police immediately. A police report can be a valuable tool in settling a claim. It also helps ensure you receive the correct identifying information of the other party, including name, address, insurance company and policy number.
Step 2
Carry a disposal camera in your glove compartment or use the photo feature on your cell phone to take pictures of the accident scene and any damages that occurred. This is extremely important in situations where you may have to move the vehicle before the police arrive.
Step 3
Gather statements and contract information (name, address and phone number) from any eyewitnesses. When there is a discrepancy, eye witness statements can be used to determine which party is at fault.
Step 4
Call your insurance company or agent as soon after the accident as possible. Most insurance companies now offer a free 24 hour claims hotline; the phone number should be located in your policy documents.
Step 5
Obtain multiple quotes to repair your vehicle. In obtaining multiple quotes, one body shop may find damage that another missed, or one shop may complete the repair work for half the price.
Step 6
Deliver a copy of the police report, eye witness statements and estimates of the damage to your insurance company. If you were at fault and have physical damage coverage on your vehicle, your insurance will be responsible for fixing your auto. If the other party was at fault, your insurance company will turn the information over to them.
Step 7
Follow up with the insurance company to ensure the claim is settled promptly.
