The NuvaRing is a form of birth control that is inserted into the vagina. The ring gradually releases low doses of synthetic progestin and estrogen to prevent pregnancy. It is a flexible 2-inch ring that is kept in the vaginal wall for 21 days. Many women stop using the NuvaRing because of its side effects. The most common side effects include vaginal infection, irregular bleeding, weight gain, headaches and nausea. Most women experience little side effects from the NuvaRing use; however, there are a few side effects that have been reported from discontinued use.
Irregular Periods
After discontinuing hormonal contraceptives, some women may experience irregular menstrual periods for up to three months or longer. According to MayoClinic.com, this condition is referred to as post-hormonal or post-contraceptive amenorrhea. Once a woman stops using the NuvaRing, it can take time for the body to adjust and return to the normal production of hormones. Doctors recommend that if a woman does not have her period for three months after discontinued use of the NuvaRing, she should first take a pregnancy test. If pregnancy is not the case and menstruation does not occur for six months, consult a health care specialist.
Infertility
A woman who has stopped taking the NuvaRing because she wants to get pregnant may experience temporary infertility while the body adjusts to the natural production of hormones. According to MayoClinic.com, usually women can begin ovulating shortly after having a period, roughly four to six weeks after discontinuing NuvaRing use. However, this is not always the case. Some women may have to wait longer for the body to return back to normal. In cases where menstruation is delayed, some women may have a difficult time getting pregnant. Women who have stopped taking the NuvaRing and do not wish to become pregnant should consider alternative contraceptive methods, such as using a condom, to prevent pregnancy.
Weight Loss
According to NuvaRing.com, many women who use the NuvaRing have reported weight gain as a side effect. Some women gain weight while on birth control for several reasons, including an increase in appetite, water retention and changes in metabolism speed. Once the NuvaRing is discontinued, these side effects can cease and, as a result, may cause weight loss. Generally, if weight gain occurs while on the NuvaRing, typically it will be caused by water retention. Once the NuvaRing is out of the system, the body will retain less water, resulting in weight loss. If abnormal weight loss occurs, a doctor should be consulted.
