Warfarin sodium is an anticoagulant that acts by inhibiting vitamin K coagulation factors. Doctors will prescribe it for the prevention or treatment of blood clots and to reduce the risk of death after a heart attack as it helps to thin the blood. There have been some side effects associated with the medication warfarin.
Hair Loss
According to MedlinePlus.com, individuals who take Warfarin may experience hair loss as a side effect of the medication. Hair loss is not limited to the head but may be experienced in other areas of the body. The medication affects hair growth at the follicular level by reducing blood supply to the skin. In severe circumstances, it can lead to tissue death and gangrene and contributes to damage at the follicle level.
Bleeding
Individuals respond differently to the administration of warfarin, based on their heredity or genetic makeup, according to MedlinePlus.com. Physicians will monitor blood clotting through blood testing on a regular basis. It will take longer than usual for an individual to stop bleeding if they are bruised or injured. Physicians generally recommend that individuals taking warfarin avoid activities that have a high risk of causing injury. Individuals who experience pain, swelling, bleeding from a cut that does not stop, nosebleeds, bleeding from the gums, coughing up blood, unusual bleeding or bruising, increase menstruation, bloodstained urine, black bowel movements, headache, dizziness or weakness should contact their physicians immediately.
Gastrointestinal
According to MedlinePlus.com, individuals who are prescribed warfarin will often experience an alteration in the way things taste. This alteration often reverts to normal after an extended length of time on the medication or when the medication has been discontinued. According to Drugs.com, other gastrointestinal side effects include nausea, vomiting, mild stomach pain, bloating and gas. Each of these side effects generally disappears when the medication is discontinued.
Sensation
According to RxList.com, Warfarin side effects also include changes in skin sensations, including itchy skin, dermatitis, hives, rash and cold intolerance. These side effects are more rare than those affecting the gastrointestinal tract or bleeding disorders. They are irritating and uncomfortable, however. Any changes in sensation should be discussed with the physician to ascertain if a change in medication is necessary.
