Ayurvedic Treatments for Acne

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Ayurveda is thought of as the most ancient method of healing and wellness. Principles of Ayurveda have been seen written in ancient Sanskrit, and have been followed by thousands of people worldwide. Ayurveda involves balancing three doshas, which exist in everyone. Ayurveda can be used as an alternative treatment for acne breakouts as well, allowing sufferers to eliminate their blemishes without exposing their skin to harsh chemicals.

Balancing the Pitta Dosha

The Pitta dosha is associated with metabolism and digestion and, when out of balance, it is connected with rashes, skin eruptions and feelings of anger and hostility. People who have an out of balance Pitta dosha will see oilier skin, will feel hot and will feel as though their skin in congested. According to the University of Connecticut, acne is one of the hallmarks in a person with an unbalanced Pitta dosha. To balance out a Pitta dosha, eat small, light, cool meals that do not contain heavy oils or butters. Avoid long periods of sun exposure, and avoid all foods that contain sugars, artificial sweeteners or additives. Eating fresh foods, such as fruits and vegetables, will purge the skin and balance out the Pitta dosha.

Balancing the Vata Dosha

The Vata dosha is associated with the nervous system and in regulating the circulation of blood in the body. When the Vata dosha is out of balance, it can cause the body to become chilled, shaky, and can make the sufferer feel anxious and nervous. Stress can increase hormone production in the body, and can lead to more acne eruptions on the skin. Once the Vata dosha is back in balance, it can alleviate the stress that could be contributing to acne breakouts. To balance the Vata dosha, take warm baths, drink herbal teas and avoid caffeine in all forms.

Balancing the Kapha Dosha

The Kapha dosha is associated with maintaining proper hydration in the body and regulating growth. An out of balance Kapha dosha can cause oily skin and congestion, which can contribute to the clogging of pores and acne pustules. To balance out the Kapha dosha, drink plenty of water, practice regular meditation and exercise regularly. Drinking water and exercising will help the system work properly and will purge the skin of toxins and excess oils. Meditation will soothe the mind, and relax the system, helping to keep the body clear and the mind calm.
