Aging can have many positive aspects, but sagging skin isn't one of them. As collagen and elastin in the skin break down as you get older, skin becomes thinner and less supple. Too much sun exposure speeds up the signs of aging, which include wrinkles, lines and sagging. Fortunately, there are a few remedies you can use to restore and rejuvenate your skin.

Dimethylaminoethanol

Related to vitamin B, dimethylaminoethanol or DMAE, was beneficial in treating various signs of aging, including sagging neck skin and neck firmness. In a study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Dermatology" in 2005, the skin-rejuvenating effects of applying a DMAE gel topically continued even two weeks after treatment ended. It was well tolerated, with no noticeable differences in side effects such as skin redness, dryness, peeling or burning compared to the placebo group. Look for anti-aging skin care products containing DMAE to help restore your skin's elasticity.

Laser Therapy

Two classes of lasers --- ablative lasers and non-ablative ---can help tighten skin, according to Paula Begoun, author of "The Original Beauty Bible." Ablative lasers restructure collagen in the skin using high levels of heat, while non-ablative lasers use less heat. Ablative lasers produce dramatic results, but are more damaging to the skin than non-ablative lasers, states Begoun. Examples of ablative lasers include the CO2 Pulse laser and Er:Yag laser. The CoolTouch and ND:Yag lasers are types of non-ablative lasers. Regardless of which class of laser you decide to try, expect to endure some degree of pain on your path to younger-looking skin.

Retinol

According to the Mayo Clinic, retinol, which is related to vitamin A, is the first antioxidant to be included in non-prescription wrinkle creams. It's also showing promise as a remedy to tighten sagging skin. Antioxidants combat free radicals that attack and break down cells and tissues in the body, including in the skin.

In a study published in the "Journal of Cosmetic Science" in August 2010, retinol, which is already known for its ability to stimulate collagen production, also enhanced the production of elastin fibers. However, retinol increases your skin's sensitivity to the sun. If you use an product containing retinol to improve sagging skin, always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outdoors.
