All golfers want to hit the ball with power and drive the ball farther. Building a powerful swing can help you lower your score. However, hitting the ball harder and getting the distance you want is not necessarily about swinging as hard as you can. You cannot sacrifice accuracy for distance under any circumstances to gain more distance. You need a consistent golf swing to start off with before you think about adding power.
Addressing the Ball
In order to hit the ball for power, be secure in your stance. You are going to try to put more force in your swing so you can't lose your balance at impact. In order to give yourself more balance, change the position of your feet as you address the ball. Instead of having your feet shoulder-width apart, your feet should be about 2 to 3 inches outside your shoulder frame to secure your position on the tee.
Backswing
In order to get hit the ball with power, you must have a strong backswing. You are not swinging with your arms and shoulders as your primary power sources. The key move is turning your hips and letting your arms and shoulders follow. In order to develop power, turn your hips all the way to the rear of the tee box and let your arms and shoulder follow.
Downswing
In order to hit the ball hard on a consistent basis, drive with your legs to and through the ball. Your back leg is the base for your downswing and your front leg should turn as your hips clear the hitting zone. "You will feel a pulling against the front of your pants as you come through the ball," said Golf Magazine Top 100 teacher Glenn Deck. "If you feel like your pants are being stretched, you will have an excellent chance of getting the distance you want."
Head Position
As you increase the club head speed at impact and start hitting the ball with more power, you will probably be eager to see your ball fly down the fairway. Resist the urge to pick your head up before you finish your swing. If you move your head because you want to see your powerful shot, you will lose accuracy and distance. Keep your head still and keep your focus on the rear and center portion of the ball.
Follow Through
Finish your swing when you are hitting your drive for power. It is not enough just to hit the ball with club head speed and then finish your swing when your club reaches knee or hip level. Finish your swing by getting your club to shoulder height.
