A fasting diet, otherwise known as a detox or cleanse, is a method of eliminating toxins from the body due to the deprivation of food. While it is not recommended to partake in a fast for more than four days, some opt to fast for months. Fasting has been a debatable topic due to the fact that you must withdraw from consuming food, however, Dr. Bragg N.D., Ph.D, author of "The Miracle of Fasting" writes that they are effective when trying to cleanse your system of impurities and regulate your digestive system.
General Fast
A general fast is withdrawing from all foods, with the exception of drinking water. This is a very difficult fast because by not eating your body experiences a number of side effects, such as dizziness, nausea and fatigue. While this fast may be challenging, it has many positive effects when concerning your overall health. You will lose weight, regulate your digestive system and rid your body of most toxins, however, you must end your fast slowly with small portions of food and juice to prevent sudden weight gain. In some cases, people end a fast and begin to eat unhealthy foods which has a negative effect on the body. End this fast by eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Juice Fast
Juice fasts are also very popular. A juice fast is mainly drinking fresh-squeezed juices, preferably made with a juicer to avoid any added or refined sugars. By drinking only natural juices, your body is ridding itself of toxins, while absorbing the many nutrients from the juices. Since the the fruit has been made into juice, it is also easier to digest and does not require the energy from your body to break down the fruit. It is important to remember that following a juice fast also comes with side effects such as nausea and diarrhea.
Raw Food Cleanse
A raw cleanse is an option for those who do not want to stop consuming food. This cleanse is eating raw foods only. You may eat fruits, vegetables, sprouted grains, nuts and seeds. By following a raw cleanse, you can not consume anything heated more than 118 degrees. In addition, you may not consume soda, coffee or tea. The only liquids you can drink are water and freshly squeezed juices. The raw cleanse has many of the same side effects as the other fasts, however they are not as drastic and are more manageable.
