Your body's metabolism is the furnace that helps you burn more calories per day. Increasing your metabolism helps you burn more calories while active and even at rest. Burning more calories will help you shed more pounds and keep them off. You can boost your metabolism by building muscle and improving your eating habits. Making a few modifications in your daily habits can boost your metabolism and help you develop a sleek physique.

Step 1

Engage in total body strength training three times per week to build muscle. Train opposing muscle groups on different days, such as back and chest, legs and abs and arms. Perform three sets of 15 reps for every exercise. Challenge your muscles with heavy weight so the last few repetitions are hard to finish.

Step 2

Eat breakfast. Consume a meal consisting of a protein and complex carbs to keep you fuller longer and give your metabolism a morning boost. Skipping breakfast puts your body in starvation mode, so you burn fewer calories to conserve energy, notes Women's Health magazine.

Step 3

Have a serving of protein at every meal. Eating proteins such as low-fat dairy, beef, skinless chicken, fish, eggs, soybeans and legumes at each meal will help to increase lean muscle mass and speed up your metabolism.

Step 4

Consume five to six meals per day to keep your metabolism fired up. Eating often helps to prevent your body from going into starvation mode and preserving calories. Digesting food burns calories, so when you are eating every three to four hours, you will burn more calories even when you are inactive, notes Natural Health magazine.
