Holistic treatments, also referred to as complementary and alternative medicine, may benefit breast cancer patients when paired with traditional medical care. Many of these holistic methods are gaining in popularity, although discretion and safety issues have been raised in regards to the safety and promises made by some practitioners. The National Cancer Institute recommends discussing holistic treatments with the cancer care team, as they will know the right methods to use on a case-by-case analysis, as well as reputable practitioners familiar with cancer care.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical approach that has been practiced in the United States for 200 years. This method employs the use of finely-tipped needles as specifically-targeted pressure points to relieve pain and harsh side effects of chemotherapy. According to Breast Cancer.org, acupuncture has recently gained in acceptance during clinical trials when paired against the drug Effexor, commonly prescribed to reduce hot flashes, night sweats and similar effects related to anti-estrogen therapies.
Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a complementary method that uses relaxation followed by the power of suggestion to place individuals in a trance-like state. During clinical trials by the National Cancer Institute on hypnotherapy prior to surgical procedures such as mastectomy, breast cancer patients reportedly used less anesthesia and pain medication during surgery than non-hypnotized cohorts. Patients also reported less pain after surgery, nausea, fatigue and discomfort overall. Hypnosis is inexpensive and non-invasive and also helps to defray the costs involved with traditional cancer treatments.
Tai Chi
Tai chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that employs the use of slow, calculated movements, focused breathing and meditation with concentration. In a 2006 clinical study by the American Cancer Society for breast cancer survivors, tai chi was compared to more traditional psychotherapy. Results showed that while traditional psychotherapy had its benefits, tai chi also improved posture, balance, stress reduction, muscle mass with toning, flexibility and stamina.
Injury is rare with tai chi due to the slow movements, and individuals from all age groups can benefit from tai chi. It is also suitable for most health conditions. However, it is imperative to discuss all treatment options with the cancer care team prior to embarking on anything new.
