The scalp plays an important part in a healthy head of hair. The hair root and shaft depend on the scalp for a healthy start to growth. Scalp problems, such as dandruff, acne and psoriasis can be a nuisance but are very common. Treating the scalp to alleviate these problems will help your hair to look its best. Shampoo is often the first step when battling a hair or scalp issue, and there are many to choose from. Using the correct shampoo for your particular scalp problem will help to effectively treat it.

Selenium Sulfide

Selenium sulfide is an anti-infective agent that relieves the itching and flaking of the scalp commonly seen with dandruff, according to the National Institutes of Health. Selenium sulfide comes in two strengths: 1 percent and 2.5 percent. According to the Mayo Clinic, 2.5 percent strength of selenium sulfide is by prescription only. For the 1 percent solution, use it twice a week for two weeks and then once a week for two to four weeks following, unless your doctor has directed otherwise. Because selenium sulfide is a strong medicinal shampoo, take caution when using it in case of allergies or negative reactions.

Salicylic Acid and Coal Tar

A shampoo with salicylic acid helps to alleviate both acne and psoriasis. It is considered a peeling agent because it works by causing the outer layer of skin to shed, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. For psoriasis, it helps to soften and remove scales. Coal tar also treats psoriasis. It slows the rapid production of skin cells to restore the scalp's appearance. Coal tar can also help reduce inflammation and itching associated with psoriasis. Both salicylic acid and coal tar are potent remedies for psoriasis and should be used cautiously. They may irritate and redden your skin, and dry out your hair.

Zinc

Zinc shampoos are good for fighting scalp acne. Zinc is a mineral used for the treatment of facial acne as well. According to the World of Hair website, zinc reduces the production of oil in the skin. Two of the most common forms are zinc gluconate and zinc sulfate. Many enzymes in the body depend on zinc for vital chemical reactions, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. Zinc is also responsible for helping build proteins as well as regulating hormones. Since acne can result from a hormone imbalance, using a zinc shampoo will help to minimize scalp acne. It is also beneficial to the hair, which is made up of mostly protein, since zinc aids in the structure of protein.
