Treadmills are popular home exercise equipment units because of the flexibility they provide. Regardless of the weather conditions, a treadmill lets you run indoors at a consistent temperature year-round. It is also ideal for those who are self-conscious, become bored easily, or have children to watch and cannot leave the house. But there are some things you need to know before stepping onto a treadmill.
Step 1
Attach the clip on the treadmill key to your clothing. This is an important safety step because if you fall, the clip will remove the treadmill key and bring the unit to a halt. Do not use a treadmill without attaching the treadmill key to your clothing.
Step 2
Determine whether you want to use a running program or run on your own. Many treadmill units have programs that automatically adjust the speed and incline to give you a preset workout. By using these programs, you will not have to worry about adjusting the speed yourself, but you will need to be aware of when the pace increases or slows down.
Step 3
Stand on the footrails running parallel to the treadmill belt on either side of it. Don't stand on the treadmill belt in case it starts quickly and throws you off.
Step 4
Set the speed on the lowest setting and insert the treadmill key to start the treadmill belt. Once you have made sure the belt is on the lowest setting, step onto it, holding onto the handrail to keep your balance.
Step 5
Begin your program or accelerate the speed. Hold onto the handrail whenever you feel uncomfortable about the speed or your balance.
Step 6
Slow the treadmill belt back down to its slowest speed before you turn off the treadmill.
