List of Foods That Are Low in Sugar

Sugar is a substance that is often referred to when it comes to diabetes. When you have this condition, your pancreas is not able to release insulin properly when your blood sugar levels rise. This occurs when you eat foods that contain sugar. Foods that are high in sugar cause a fast rise in blood sugar levels and foods that are low cause a slow release.

Meats

Beef is high in protein, fat, and iron, and it is also low in sugar. Examples of beef products include flank steak, beef patties, liver and sirloin. Venison, bison, duck, chicken, turkey, lamb and eggs are also high in protein and low in sugar.

Fish

All types of fish are a source of protein and they are low in sugar. Cold water fish like salmon, cod, halibut, tuna, mackerel, herring and sardines are also high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are healthy fats. Shellfish and seafood are also low in sugar. Examples of these include crabs, lobster, clams, shrimp, squid, scallops and oysters.

Whole Grains

Whole grains are high in fiber, carbs, and they are also low in sugar. Specific examples include barley, cornmeal, rice, buckwheat and oat bran. Breads, cereals, macaroni and spaghetti made with whole grains are also low in sugar.

Vegetables

Vegetables are high in water content, vitamins, fiber and they are also low in sugar. Examples include broccoli, cauliflower, celery, kale, collards, cucumbers, corn, potatoes, asparagus, tomatoes, kale, all forms of lettuce and cabbage.

Dairy

Dairy products are high in calcium, protein and fat. Cheese is a dairy product that is also low in sugar. This goes for all varieties of cheese, such as swiss, muenster, cheddar, mozzarella, sharp and provolone.

Beans

Beans are a carbohydrate that is high in fiber, iron and magnesium. They are also low in sugar. Specific examples include lima beans, pinto beans, garbanzo beans, lentils, chickpeas, black-eyed peas and kidney beans.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are high in protein, fiber and essential fatty acids which are healthy fats. They are also low in sugar. Examples include walnuts, almonds, pecans, pine nuts and sunflower seeds.

Alcohol

Alcohol comes in many forms and they are not all low in sugar. Examples of alcoholic beverages that are include light beer, whiskey, vodka, rum, white wine and red wine.
