Grapefruits are familiar as tasty citrus fruits but you may not realize that the seeds of this fruit offer benefits as well. According to Purdue University, grapefruit seed oil is dark and bitter when initially derived. However, once the oil is refined and bleached it becomes a pale-yellow color and is much more bland in flavor and similar to that of olive oil, as reported by Purdue University. Grapefruit seed oil offers many different benefits for people.

Unsaturated Fat

According to Purdue University, grapefruit seed oil is an unsaturated fat and is becoming increasingly popular to use because of its health benefits. Like olive oil, it is healthier than other vegetable oil, butter, or shortening. Iowa State University reports that unsaturated fats hold many benefits for the heart and help to lower harmful cholesterol. This can help to prevent diseases such as heart disease, colon cancer and even strokes, as reported by Iowa State University.

Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Fungal

Grapefruit seed oil is a natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent. According to Chinese-Herbs.org, grapefruit seed oil is beneficial for treating cuts and scrapes and helping to prevent infections. Baby Care

To use this remedy you should wipe your baby's mouth with the oil after feeding and use the oil on your nipples to prevent the infection from spreading to your nipples if you are breast-feeding. In addition, you can use grapefruit seed oil on your baby's bottom to treat a yeast infection that might occur in the diaper area.
