A biopsy is a procedure used to remove suspicious cells from the breast. The removed cells are sent to be examined under a microscope and diagnosed. Depending on the type of biopsy, you may lie on your stomach or back during the procedure. According to MedlinePlus, most biopsies are outpatient and only take about an hour, including prep time. The specific preparation steps for your biopsy may vary depend on the type of biopsy being performed, so always follow your doctor's instructions.
Step 1
Tell your doctor about any medications, including over-the-counter ones, you take. You may be instructed to stop taking aspirin or other blood thinners 3 days before your procedure.
Step 2
Have a family member or friend drive you to and from the procedure. With most biopsies, you are only given a local anesthetic. However, biopsies can be emotionally and physically stressful, so it helps to have someone for support.
Step 3
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You will be asked to undress from the waist up. Lying on a table for an hour in sweat pants will be much more tolerable than wearing tight jeans or dress slacks.
Step 4
Wear minimal jewelry. You will usually be asked to remove any jewelry prior to the procedure.
Step 5
Do not wear any lotion, perfume, deodorant or powder.
Tips and Warnings
- Research online for information from other women who have had the same type of procedure done. The unknown can be scary. Hearing first-hand accounts of what you will encounter can help significantly (see Resources).
