If your doctor has told you that you need to rapidly lose weight to improve your health, some of his suggestions might include cutting back to less than 15 percent fat and to eat more low carbohydrate foods. Low carbohydrate foods are fairly simple to identify. Many of the products you buy are now labeled with the carb content for each serving. If you'd prefer not to do the homework in determining which foods are low carb foods, emphasize fats and proteins instead. Just make sure that you include some carbs in your diet.
Vegetables
The three easiest places to reduce the number of carbs in your diet are in vegetables, fruits and nuts. Vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals and fiber. You can come up with a number of creative dishes that are not only good for you, but fill you up, as well. Some good vegetables to begin with include asparagus, French beans, beetroot, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, raw celery, cucumbers, lettuce, mushrooms, peas, boiled potatoes, radishes, spinach, raw tomatoes, turnips and watercress.
Fruits
While some fruits do contain a high concentration of carbohydrates, not all of them do. For example, vegetables are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and fiber, and they taste great. Try including some of the following fruits in your menus: baked apples, apricots, bananas, raw blackberries, cherries, figs, white grapes, lemon juice, cantaloupe, oranges, peaches, pears, pineapple, plums and strawberries.
Nuts
Nuts are an excellent source of fiber and fat, and can be used in almost any dish you create. Try including almonds, Brazil nuts, chestnuts, cob nuts, peanuts and walnuts. Many nuts also have the added value of containing Omega-3 fatty acids---fatty acids that help reduce your LDL cholesterol, while increasing your HDL cholesterol.
