How to Increase Milk Supply When Breastfeeding

Many nursing mothers--particularly first-time mothers--become concerned about their breast milk supply at one point or another. Breast milk intake is not as easily measured as formula, unless the breast milk is pumped for the baby, and this leaves many moms concerned that their baby may not be getting the nutrition it needs. There is a very small number of women who can't increase their breast milk production or provide enough for their child, but for the vast majority of women, increasing their production is possible.

Step 1

Breastfeed frequently, or pump your breast milk to keep your mammary gland active.

Step 2

Use both breasts to breastfeed your child during every nursing.

Step 3

Eat snacks that are high in protein and calcium. This will give your body the supplies needed to produce milk.

Step 4

Take Fenugreek, an herbal supplement known to help increase breast milk production. Take two to four pills three times a day.

Step 5

Get plenty of rest. Your body is putting in extra work while producing milk, and you need to conserve your energy for milk production.

Step 6

Ask your doctor if medication might be useful in increasing your milk production. You might want to inquire about Reglan, a prescription pill that increases milk production in nursing women.
