Phoenix, Arizona is known across the country for stunning desert landscapes and a rich history of cultural diversity, but casual visitors to the city might not know that Phoenix is buzzing with attractions aimed at the family. Thanks to this wide variety of attractions and activities, parents who are willing to seek out fresh experiences can entertain and enlighten their kids regardless of their location or budget.
Landmarks
Stimulate and educate your children at the same time by taking them on a trip to some of Phoenix's historical landmarks. Phoenix's Heritage Square is a collection of restored homes and museums, some of which are in the National Register of Historical Places. Kids will be thrilled at the prospect of visiting the Arizona Toy and Doll Museum. This rustic house contains a rotating cast of antique toys and dazzling modern favorites, including some of the original toys produced for the Star Wars films, as well as a doll that's nearly 300-years-old.
Museums
Taking your kids to a museum doesn't need to be a passive, stodgy process--especially not in Phoenix. The Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum is a fitting tribute to a state that mines more copper than any in the country, with thousands of fossils, minerals and brilliant stones. The Arizona Science Museum is a very short drive away, and features an IMAX theater, a planetarium, and a large assortment of exhibits designed to teach and entertain.
Crafts
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average American child spends four hours a day in front of a television. Given that decreasing this time can lead to a decrease in obesity, displays of violence, and smoking as an adult, it's no wonder that many parents want to introduce their children to productive, fun tasks they can tackle head on. Once you've taken them to see places like Paint On Pottery and the Greater Arizona Puppet Theater, share in activities that will ignite their curiosity and become hobbies down the line.
Sports
If you've had your fill of concrete amusement parks, the Arcadia Ice Rink is a great way to shake off the stifling Arizona heat. Don't let a lack of skating knowledge deter you. Representatives from U.S. Figure Skating give lessons from ages preschool and up, teaching the coordination and balance needed to function on the ice.
Lunch
After a long day of sightseeing, it can be tempting to give in to the urge to splurge on fatty, processed food, especially if you're in an unfamiliar city. But while you're in Phoenix, you can skip the corn syrup and pick up some Sweet Tomatoes--this chain restaurant has locations across the Phoenix area and features farm fresh salads, soups and breads--your kids will love getting to see focaccia dishes cooked in front of them. But like any restaurant where fresh food is served, the menu might change according to what's in season.
