Hair loss in women is not an uncommon occurrence. Several factors such as stress, hormonal imbalance and genetics contribute to female hair loss, leaving the desire for treatment at an all-time high. While many products are marketed with men in mind, many of these treatment options are also safe for women who suffer from balding. Before starting any treatments, consult your physician for blood testing to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

Step 1

Apply over-the-counter 2 percent minoxidil solution to your scalp daily. According to MedlinePlus, minoxidil is the only FDA-approved female pattern hair loss treatment to effectively regrow and stop female hair loss. Do not discontinue use of this product, as ending treatments results in loss of regrown hair.

Step 2

Discuss any medications you are taking with your doctor. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians' website FamilyDoctor.org, medications can also be responsible for female pattern hair loss. If your medication is causing this condition, request a change in medication to treat your condition and stop further shedding.

Step 3

Ask your doctor about prescription hormone medications such as estrogen or progesterone treatments. According to an article in "Marie Claire" magazine, hormone-regulating medications are effective in treating hair loss that is due to hormonal imbalance.

Step 4

Avoid overuse of heated styling aids and tight hairstyles, which can damage the hair follicles and cause inflammation and scarring, according to FamilyDoctor.org. Tight hairstyles and excessive pulling of your hair create a condition called traction alopecia, which may prevent hair from growing back once scarring has occurred.
