The most obvious reaction to a headache is to reach for a pill. However, pain medicine is not always a solution or even readily available. Some people don't react well to pain medication or might not get enough relief to justify taking a pill every few hours. If you suffer frequent headaches, it might be worth it to talk to your doctor to see if he can determine the cause. Certain foods, stress and even jaw clenching can lead to headaches, according to MayoClinic.com.

Step 1

Relax. Identify stress triggers. Tension headaches can be caused by feeling overwhelmed, according to MayoClinic.com. Plan your day ahead and schedule things so you don't suddenly realize you forgot an important appointment. Deep breathing can also help. If you're feeling the tension building, step aside from the situation and take a few minutes to breathe and calm down.

Step 2

Apply a cold compress to your head. Try to find a dark quiet room and lie down. Apply a wet cold towel to your forehead or wrap some ice in a towel and hold over your forehead, temples and back of your neck. According to MayoClinic.com, some people might respond to heat as well. Try a heating pad or a hot towel and see if that helps.

Step 3

Call a massage therapist. You can try massaging your own head, neck and shoulders, but consider getting a professional massage. A licensed professional will know how to relieve tension and help you correct your posture, which can be causing or worsening the headache.

Step 4

Massage peppermint oil on your temples, as recommended by Farmers' Almanac. You can also add a few drops of peppermint oil to the cold compress before applying it to your forehead.

Step 5

Drink a cup of feverfew tea or take gingko biloba supplements. According to Farmers' Almanac, these herbs can help reduce headache pain. Talk to your doctor before taking any herbs or supplements, especially if you are also taking prescription medication or have any health issues.
