Subway is a franchised sandwich chain that has shops around the globe. Customers are allowed to choose from a range of sandwiches and bread types and can choose from among a range of condiments and vegetables. Subway offers various side orders and dessert options as well. As customers can choose how to make their sandwiches, nutrition information can vary from store to store, and from sandwich to sandwich, but Subway does publish standard nutrition information for all of its products.

Subway Menu Items

Subway divides its nutritional guideinto five main sections. Nutrition information is provided for sandwiches, salads, breakfast and pizza, breads and condiments, and dessert sides and vegetables. Serving size, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, sugars and protein information is provided in grams, while cholesterol and sodium are provided in milligrams. Subway also provides the percentage of daily value of vitamin A, vitamin C and iron, along with the number of calories and calories from fat.

Subway Nutritional Information for Sandwiches

Subway sandwich information is provided across six subcategories, specifically 6-inch, low-fat sandwiches with six grams of fat or less; six-inch flatbread sandwiches with seven grams of fat or less; low-fat, foot-long sandwiches; six-inch sandwiches; kids' meal sandwiches; and six-inch, limited-time offer/regional subs. Nutritional information is based on using nine-grain wheat bread, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, green peppers and cucumbers. Cheese is also included in nutritional information for six-inch sandwiches. Standard six-inch Subway sandwiches range from 230 calories for the Veggie Delight to 580 calories for the Big Pastrami and Meatball Marinara sandwiches.

Subway Breads

The nine types of standard Subway sandwich breads are Monterey Jack cheddar, Italian herbs and cheese, Italian (white), nine-grain wheat, honey oat, hearty Italian, roasted garlic, flatbread and Parmesan oregano. Subway also offers light wheat English muffins, mini-wheat bread, mini-Italian bread and a wrap. Calorie counts are similar for the main sandwich breads, ranging from 200 to 260 calories for the six-inch version, but can dip as low as 90 calories for the English muffins.

Subway Condiments

Subway offers condiments in various flavors. They include bacon, ranch dressing, olive oil blend, red wine vinaigrette, mayonnaise, light mayonnaise, honey mustard sauce, chipotle southwest sauce, vinegar, sweet onion sauce, and yellow or brown mustard. Vegetables for sandwiches include tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, olives, green peppers, jalapeno peppers, cucumbers and banana peppers. Vegetable calorie counts are less than five each, but condiment calories can range up to 110 for ranch dressing and mayonnaise.

Subway Variations

Although Subway publishes standard nutritional information, menu items and preparation techniques can vary from store to store. International stores can offer fundamentally different sandwich constructions. For example, the New Zealand Subway nutritional information lists a calorie count of 383 for the six-inch tuna sandwich, as opposed to the 530 listed for the American version of the same sandwich.
