Almost everyone wishes their hair would grow faster. You may long for faster hair growth especially if you have dry or damaged hair or your hair hasn't turned out quite the way you'd like after a chemical treatment. Unfortunately, the amount your hair grows each year is genetically predetermined. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, most people experience about 1/2 inch of hair growth every month. However, you can help your hair grow faster by keeping it healthy and free of damage.
Step 1
Limit your chemical treatments, such as relaxers, straighteners, perms and dyes. If at all possible, avoid chemical treatments while you're growing your hair. Although infrequent chemical treatments won't cause an undue amount of damage to your hair, too frequent or improperly done chemical treatments can cause split ends and damage your hair shaft.
Step 2
Wash your hair with a shampoo containing proteins such as silk and natural oils such as jojoba or coconut. Shampoos containing protein and natural oils can infuse your hair with strength and help to keep it nourished and soft. Only wash your hair when necessary, as over-washing can dry out your hair. People with normal to dry hair only need to wash every three days or so, while those with oily hair may have to wash more frequently to remove oil buildup.
Step 3
Use a weekly deep conditioning treatment, such as a mud pack or hair mask. You can also get a luxurious deep conditioning treatment from your salon, but these are more expensive and time-intensive. You can purchase a deep conditioner at most drug stores and beauty salons that will provide similar benefits to a salon treatment.
Step 4
Trim dead ends regularly. Split ends can cause the appearance of slow hair growth, because they split up your hair shaft until they break off. According to a MarieClaire.com interview with stylist John Barrett, you should trim your ends every six weeks. Don't pick at split ends or try to cut them off yourself, as this will give your hair an uneven appearance and possibly cause more breakage.
Step 5
Implement a regular stress management routine. Do yoga, meditate or just relax with a good book. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, too much stress can cause your hair to enter the telogen, or resting phase, of hair growth.
