Enzyte is a "male enhancement supplement" well known for its silent "Smiling Bob" spokesman. Because Enzyte is considered to be a dietary supplement, it falls under the auspices of the FDA's Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act. As a result, the supplement manufacturer, Berkeley Premium Nutraceuticals and not the FDA is responsible for ensuring the product's safety.
Herbs
Enzyte's herbal components are Korean red ginseng, ginkgo biloba, pine bark, tribulus terrestris, horny goat weed, oats, maca, muira puama, saw palmetto and Swedish flower pollen. Some of these herbs--such as ginkgo biloba, which is known to be a blood thinner--may interact with prescription medications and cause unintended side effects.
Proprietary Blend
Because Enzyte's herbal formula is considered to be a "proprietary blend," the manufacturer is able to list all the herbal ingredients together, giving their total amount (there are 541 mg of the proprietary compound in each one-tablet dose) while not identifying the individual amount or proportion of each herb.
Non-Herbs
While the bulk of the Enzyte product is made up of herbs, it also contains L-arginine, an amino acid (one of protein's building blocks) that is believed to increase blood flow and might, in turn, support a man's sexual function. Enzyte also contains octacosanol, which is derived from vegetable waxes and is also supposed to support one's capacity and endurance for strenuous physical activity.
Vitamins and Minerals
Enzyte also contains the minerals zinc (30 mg) and copper (4 mg) in each pill, both of which are believed--but not scientifically proven--to have possible beneficial effects on male sexual function. Note that the amount of zinc in each Enzyte tablet is already twice the recommended daily intake, and excessive zinc intake may deplete your body of other minerals. Enzyte also contains 30 mg of niacin (vitamin B3), which helps maintain a balanced body metabolism.
Standardized Extract
Several of the herbs in Enzyte, like ginkgo biloba leaf, pine bark and horny goat weed, are a standardized extract. This means that each batch of the herb supplied to the manufacturer is formulated to fall within a standardized range of product potency. This practice is intended to help alleviate some of the concern about natural variances in potency between different plants of the same herb species.
