If your latest home hair dye experiment failed, there are products on the market that will remove the dye. According to CareFair.com, bleach is necessary to remove hair dye. It is always best to let a professional hairstylist correct your color, but if you want to do it yourself, you can mix up a soap cap, also called a bleach bath. This process is effective for removing vegetable-based, semi-permanent hair dyes. As with any hair-lightening product, you should always snip off a strand of your hair and test the mixture on it before applying it to your head.
Step 1
Pour 1/8 cup bleach powder into a plastic mixing bowl.
Step 2
Add 1/8 cup liquid developer, and mix thoroughly with the dye brush.
Step 3
Measure 1/4 cup clarifying shampoo, and add it to the bleach mixture. Mix well.
Step 4
Dampen your hair with water by spraying it with a spray bottle, combing water through it or dunking your head under the faucet for a moment and towel drying. Hair should be moist, not wet.
Step 5
Put on latex gloves, and paint the mixture onto your hair using the dye brush.
Step 6
Massage your head to create a lather. Bleach can cause a burning sensation, so be gentle. Do not scrub.
Step 7
Cover your hair with the shower cap, and set the timer for seven minutes. Check frequently to make sure you are achieving the desired result. Leave the mixture on your hair for up to 15 minutes.
Step 8
Rinse thoroughly with hot water, and then shampoo your hair with plain shampoo. Rinse again. You can use a conditioning shampoo at this time, if you prefer.
Step 9
Apply a deep conditioning treatment to your hair. Leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing it out.
Tips and Warnings
- If your hair is longer, you may need to mix up more of the solution. This is OK, as long as you stick with the basic recipe. Use one part bleach powder, one part developer and two parts shampoo.
- Bleach can burn your skin and cause hair breakage. If you are unsure about how to use it or your strand test does not produce the desired results, go to a professional hair stylist.
