Playing football is a sport that requires toughness, determination and athletic ability. Football is a hard contact sport that has been called a collision sport. As a result, the game of tackle football cannot be entered lightly. The basics of the game are blocking and tackling, and they are the keys to all successful teams. When the fans who attend games cheer long runs or passes, it is almost always the result of blockers who give those players the time, support and protection needed to make those plays.

Step 1

Put an 11-man team on the field to move the ball when you are on offense. You can move the ball by running or passing it. In order to do either successfully, you need blockers who can move your opponents and create holes for the running backs or a protective area called a pocket for the passer. While you have 11 men on offense, your opponent will put 11 players on the field to keep you from advancing the ball.

Step 2

Move the ball downfield to maintain possession. In football, you have four plays--or downs--to gain 10 yards. If you do not gain 10 yards after the fourth play, your opponents get possession. If you have the ball on your own half of the field, you will probably punt the ball to your opponent on the fourth play--called fourth down--so you can make your opponent start from a point much farther down the field. If you can hold on to the ball and keep moving it, you will score six points if you can run or pass the ball into the endzone. If you can't get into the endzone but you can kick the ball through the uprights, you get three points for a field goal.

Step 3

Play for 60 minutes. The team that scores the most points in that time frame wins the game. The game is divided into four 15-minute quarters. When the first and third 15-minute quarter are finished, the teams change position on the field and move in the opposite direction. Changing ends makes sure that neither team gets an unfair field position advantage over the course of the game.

Step 4

Play the game on a field that is 100 yards long and 53 yards wide. There are 10-yard endzones at both ends of the field. Players can come in and out of the game at any point. The team cannot put more than 11 men on the field at any point.

Step 5

Play a recreational game called touch football with friends, family, neighbors or co-workers. This game can be played by four or more players and there is no hard hitting or tackling. In touch football, teams usually play on a small field or even the street. The game is not usually timed. The first team to score a designated number of touchdowns wins the game.
