A baseball glove needs to be your best friend out in the field so it needs to be shaped to feel comfortable on your hand when you're catching fly balls and line drives. While the use of oil is common for softening up a glove, there are other products and methods you can use to mold the glove to your liking.

Step 1

Soften the leather of your glove by using foam shaving cream, petroleum jelly or saddle soap. Avoid saturating the glove. Apply the product lightly to avoid making your glove too heavy or hastening the deterioration of the leather.

Step 2

Lay your glove on the dirt or grass and beat on with a hammer or baseball bat to loosen the leather. Periodically pick up the glove and mold it to your liking.

Step 3

Take your glove to the batting cages and catch balls instead of hitting them. The relentless catching will help shape the pocket of your glove.

Step 4

Shape the pocket of your glove overnight by placing a baseball in the pocket and tying the glove shut with shoelaces or rubber bands. Place the glove and ball beneath your mattress and sleep on them.

Step 5

Place your glove in a 350 degree oven for 10 to 15 minutes or place it on the dashboard of your car when it's out in the sun for the afternoon. This holds the potential risk of deforming the leather but is an option if you're careful.
