Calcium is an essential mineral for maintaining strong bones and teeth. This mineral is found in foods such as broccoli, salmon, almonds and dairy products, according to James Balch, M.D., and Phyllis Balch, C.N.C., authors of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." A calcium deficiency may lead to conditions such as osteoporosis, which is characterized by low bone density. Some foods may block the absorption of calcium, which may lead to deficiencies.

Spinach

Spinach is a green, leafy vegetable that contains oxalic acid, a compound that interferes with the body's ability to absorb and utilize calcium, according to the World's Healthiest Foods website. The oxalic acid found in spinach may also aggravate gallbladder and kidney problems. This compound may contribute to the formation of kidney stones.

Asparagus

Asparagus is a vegetable known for its high concentration of vitamins and nutrients. One cup of asparagus provides more than the recommended daily intake of vitamin K, which is necessary for proper blood clotting and wound healing. Asparagus is also a rich source of vitamin C, folic acid and vitamin A. Asparagus also contains oxalates, however, and may impede calcium absorption, according to Balch and Balch.

Other Foods

Numerous other foods contain calcium-blocking oxalates, according to the World's Healthiest Foods website. Fruits such as berries, grapes, plums and kiwifruit, as well as Swiss chard, celery, parsley and okra are also oxalate-dense foods. Oxalates are also found in soy products, including tofu, soy milk and soybeans, as well as in peanuts, cashews and wheat bran.
