At some point in your life, you will likely have a scar. You may have one from birth or from a cut, burn, puncture wound or acne. Small scars often do not run deep into your flesh and are relatively easy to repair. There are are several options to remove small scars that include peels, soft tissue injections, laser therapy or dermabrasion.

Step 1

Use a chemical peel to remove small scars. A dermatologist will apply an acidic chemical solution to the affected skin to burn away the top skin layers. The chemicals used vary depending on how severe the scar is. Phenols are used for deeper scars while alpha hydroxy acids are lighter peels used for more superficial scars. Chemical peels reduce scar visibility and even out your skin tone.

Step 2

Use soft tissue fillers like collagen to get rid of depressed or pitted scars. These are often caused by acne. A small amount of collagen or your own fatty tissue injected in the skin surrounding the scar help raise it to even out your skin. This temporary treatment must be done every six months since the fillers break down over time.

Step 3

Employ laser resurfacing techniques. A high energy laser light beam is scanned over the scar helping remove damaged skin cells. This helps regenerate new tissue cells and eliminates the scarred skin. You may have to undergo a series of treatments for laser resurfacing to be effective.

Step 4

Visit a dermatologist for a dermabrasion treatment. A rotary metal or stone instrument shaves off the top layers of skin. It removes damaged skin and promotes new cell growth. The main advantage of dermabrasion versus the aforementioned techniques is that it only has to be done once to be effective. You may experience some redness and irritation, but after two to three weeks, skin heals to reveal a softer, more scar-free appearance.
