Overview

Whether you decide to detox from cocaine on your own, with help from friends or former addicts or at a treatment facility, there will be uncomfortable moments. Counselors at Michael's House in California experienced with cocaine detoxification, report that cocaine is not physically addicting like opiates or alcohol. The main component of cocaine addiction is psychological. That is not to say that the body won't undergo some physical discomfort however. There are steps you can take to make the detox from cocaine successful.

Step 1

Stop using the drug. Get rid of any cocaine you may have as well as all the paraphernalia you used with it. You must discontinue all use of the drug to completely cleanse the system of all the toxins.

Step 2

Expect some withdrawal symptoms, especially if you've been using cocaine (coke) for a long time. Most symptoms will be psychological in nature and may include agitation, irritably and restlessness. Many cocaine addicts experience various levels of depression, nightmares or malaise. Since cocaine depresses the appetite, expect a resurgence of your desire to eat.

Step 3

Prepare for the strongest withdrawal symptom, which is a strong craving to get more coke and get high. One of the hallmarks of addiction is the insatiable craving for the drug despite the consequences. Prepare by having people on stand-by to whom you can talk and receive encouragement. Make a list of the reasons you are quitting and keep it nearby to remind you of your commitment.

Step 4

Contact a doctor who can prescribe anti-depressants if your thoughts turn to suicide or other self-destructive behaviors. Doctors at the Mayo Clinic report that paranoid psychosis and severe depression are possible side effects of cocaine withdrawal and can be alleviated with medication.

Step 5

Stock up on drinks such as herbal teas to calm yourself and sports drinks to replace lost electrolytes. Counselors at Orange County Detox report that dehydration and fatigue are common problems associated with cocaine detox and must be addressed to maintain a healthy body to support the mental withdrawal you will experience.

Tips and Warnings

  • Attend a meeting of a 12-step recovery program such as Cocaine Anonymous before you begin your detoxification process. Many recovering cocaine addicts will be on hand to help you through the detox and to offer support and guidance as you begin your recovery. They can check up on you for the first couple days and bring you to additional meetings where you can get motivation from others who have kicked the habit and remained clean.
  • Relapse is another hallmark of addiction so don't give up if you cave in and use again while you are going through the detox process. Just continue to go through the process and follow the steps above until it sticks.
