Cincinnati is located in Ohio, north of the Ohio River. The greater Cincinnati area is home to over 2 million people. It has been nicknamed the "Queen City of the West." In the winter, the average temperature for Cincinnati is around 30 F and the city gets approximately 25 inches of snow, this makes it the ideal city for many popular winter activities.
Getting There
Cincinnati is located in southwestern Ohio, almost directly on the Indiana-Ohio state line. It's accessible by highways 275 and 75. Cincinnati also has an international airport and more than one small scale airports within the city.
Skating
Every Thanksgiving weekend the Fountain Square Ice Rink reopens for a season of fun. The 7,000 square foot ice rink is approximately the same size as Rockefeller Center. It has skate rentals, lockers and benches. There are many restaurants and vendors nearby where you can get a treat or a hot cup of cocoa. Admission for an afternoon or evening of fun is only $2.50.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Thirty minutes outside of Cincinnati is the Perfect North Slopes ski and snowboarding resort. Open from mid-December to March, it's the perfect winter activity for anyone who wants to get out of the city for the day. The slopes offer lessons for beginner skiers and snowboarders and the trails range from beginner to expert in difficulty. If you want to make it into an overnight trip, then there is the option of turning your ski pass into a package for a bed and breakfast or hotel in the area.
History
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is open year-round and is a must-see for anyone in the Cincinnati area. Visiting the center can be a welcome escape from the cold outdoor temperatures in the winter months. The museum tells the story of slave's crossing over the Ohio River to escape from slavery. Exhibits, role playing and hands-on activities are all part of the story-telling.
Arts and Culture
Every March, the Cincinnati International Wine Festival happens for a weekend. It is one of the largest annual wine events in the country and involves a weekend of wine tasting, dinners and charity auctions. Also during the winter months the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, which is the fifth oldest orchestra in the country, puts on concerts. If you're visiting Cincinnati between December and May, the Symphony Orchestra makes a wonderful night out.
