Silk Vanilla Soy Milk claims to be a heart-healthy alternative to traditional milk. The Food and Drug Administration qualifies that "soy protein, when included in a low saturated fat and cholesterol diet, also helps to lower blood total and LDL-cholesterol levels." This is associated with reduced risk of coronary heart disease. People looking to enhance their overall health and reduce risk of disease and those with milk allergies and lactose intolerance can obtain many nutritional benefits from this beverage.
Calories and Fat Content
Per one-cup serving, Silk Vanilla Soy Milk provides 100 calories and 3.5 grams of fat. With no trans fat and 0.5 g of saturated fat, this beverage is considered within the heart-healthy range. To reduce calories and fat further, Silk offers a Light Vanilla Soy Milk, which contains only 80 calories and 2 g of fat. Both versions offer naturally occurring ALA omega-3 fatty acids.
Protein Content
Silk Vanilla Soy Milk contains 6.25 g of protein. A person must consume 25 g of soy protein per day to reach heart-healthy benefits. In a report published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, researchers found a statistically significant five percent reduction in cholesterol in people who consumed soy milk as compared to those who consumed one-percent milk.
Calcium Content
With 30 percent of the recommended daily value of calcium, Silk Vanilla Soy Milk provides almost as much calcium as a glass of non-fat milk, which provides 35 percent. The Harvard School of Public Health cites three reasons against receiving calcium from cow's milk or milk products--lactose intolerance, high saturated-fat content in many milk products, and possible increased risk of ovarian cancer and prostate cancer.
Vitamin and Mineral Content
Silk Vanilla Soy Milk offers 50 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin B12, 30 percent of vitamin D and riboflavin, and 10 percent of vitamin A and magnesium. It also provides 6 percent of the recommended daily value of iron and folate, 8 percent of selenium and 4 percent of zinc.
